WHO Sounds Global Alarm: Three Contaminated Cough Syrups in India Declared Toxic

Identified in the warning were Coldrif, Respifresh TR, and ReLife, three popular Indian cough syrups, that contained diethylene glycol (DEG), a highly toxic industrial solvent. Child Deaths Spark Nationwide Concern

There are reports of multiple child deaths in Madhya Pradesh that may be due to these contaminated syrups. Symptoms like nausea, stomach ache, and fainting have been experienced by the families of the victims only a few hours after taking the syrups. The main cause of the affliction has been identified as poisoning with DEG through the investigations carried out, thus inciting the people's protest and sorrow, widespread.

Government and WHO Response

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) announced that production has been stopped and the affected batches have been recalled with immediate effect. The WHO call is that every country should keep a watch on what it is importing in the pharmaceutical sector and should inform them if these products are found in their markets. The Maharashtra and Gujarat governments, among others in India, have already taken stringent measures to carry out deep inspections in this sector to ensure the safety of all oral liquid medicines,

The companies that are involved in this scandal are being monitored by the authorities who are also taking legal steps. Safety is being checked in factories in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat which are presently being stopped.
