Pakistan's Limited Role in UN Security Council Committees

Pakistan desired to become the chairman of 1267 Sanctions Committee, 1540 (Non-Proliferation) Sanctions Committee, 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee and 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee of the Security Council. But they only got the chance to head the committee concerning Taliban. Vice-chairmanship of the Counter-Terrorism Committee was accorded to them. Pakistan's request for chairmanship in other committees was denied.

Delay in Seat Distribution

The method of distribution of seats in the Security Council was to be finalized by January 2025, as per sources. However, it was held up due to Pakistan's delay. Pakistan's 'lack of consensus and unreasonable demands' is behind this. The members of the Security Council have also reportedly been infuriated by their stance.

Leadership Roles

The Taliban Sanctions Committee, which is currently headed by Pakistan, will be co-chaired by Russia and Guyana. Denmark has been entrusted with the chairmanship of the 1267 Sanctions Committee (co-chaired by Russia and Sierra Leone), and Ecuador is chairing the 1540 (Non-Proliferation) Sanctions Committee. Algeria is the co-chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee, which has been entrusted to Pakistan. France and Russia will also co-chair this committee along with Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Limited Role

The 15-member UN Security Council consists of five permanent members and 10 nations are as non-permanent members for two years. Pakistan is at present a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The duties of the different committees under the Security Council are shared equally among permanent and non-permanent members. Likewise, Pakistan also desired to head four committees. But for the time being, they have to settle with one chairmanship and one vice-chairmanship. India also presided over the Taliban Sanctions Committee and the Counter-Terrorism Committee. Besides, Pakistan will co-chair the Informal Working Group (IWG) of the Security Council with Greece.
