India, Pakistan agree to immediate and complete ceasefire

India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate and complete ceasefire, which is to come into force from 5 PM today, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said in a statement released on Saturday. Both nations are now ready to negotiate on this May 12.

Misri assured that Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations called his Indian counterpart earlier today and the two sides mutually agreed to stop all military operations--on ground, in the sea, and in the air--from 1700 hours IST.

He further stated, "Today, orders have been issued on both sides to give effect to this understanding. The Directors General of Military Operations will meet again on the 12th of May."

The ceasefire and suspension of military activity between India and Pakistan were hammered out directly with the two nations, according to sources. India has negotiated this bilaterally and not because of mediation, the sources explained.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced, "India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on the stoppage of firing and military action. India has stood firm and resolute in its opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so."

According to the development, Pakistan reopened its airspace on Saturday.

Terms of India-Pakistan ceasefire

1. The Indus Waters Treaty will continue to be suspended.

2. No Indian rollback of visas.

3. India will not give in to terror.

US President Donald Trump has asserted that the India and Pakistan ceasefire was brokered by the United States after a night of negotiations.

"After a very long night of negotiations brokered by the United States, I am happy to report that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Nations on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter," wrote Trump on Truth Social.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, "In the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I have met with senior Indian and Pakistani leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Army Chief of Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisers Ajit Doval and Asim Malik."

Earlier, on May 7, India conducted a significant counterterror operation under 'Operation Sindoor' against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This was against the backdrop of a fatal terror strike in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which left 26 dead and was sponsored by Pakistan.
