India Urges Its Citizens to Leave Iran Immediately as Security Situation Worsens

The Government of India has come up with an urgent, alarming advisory requesting all Indian nationals in Iran to immediately leave the country. This is a stern step, which, the previous advisory had been issued on January 5, 2026, and it had reportedly warned against Travel not considered essential. The most recent order coincides with the development of much more dire security situations in Iran, due to mass anti-government demonstrations and the escalating tension in the region that threatens to make the situation further deteriorate.

Reason India Issued the Emergency Advisory:

The ruling comes after an excruciating decline in the domestic security situation of Iran. The demonstrations which started due to the economic sufferings such as the steep decline of the Iranian rial have extended to all 31 provinces and transformed into a larger political movement. Cases of a ruthless crackdown by the security agencies, mass arrests, loss of lives, blocking the internet and restrictions of movements have left an unpredictable environment. This has brought serious issue about the safety of the estimated 10,000 Indian nationals living in the country.

Who Is Impacted and What Citizens Need to do:

The advisory pertains to Indian nationals and other Persons of Indian Origin in Iran regardless of being students, pilgrims, businesspersons, and tourists. The citizens are highly encouraged to vacate the country as soon as possible through any available commercial means. Individuals who cannot leave now must be very careful, reduce unnecessary movement, stay in their houses where feasible, keep all their travel and identity documents at hand and contact the Indian Embassy regularly. Families in India also request their relatives to be registered with the embassy in the event of communication networks being broken.

Diplomatic Developments and How Departures Are Being Managed:

There were no special evacuation flights announced as compared to other crises in the past. The Indian government is aiding departures using the already established commercial flights, although airlines are changing routes due to limited airspace restrictions. The Indian Embassy in Tehran has set emergency helplines and email services to help the citizens. In the meantime, diplomatic talks are taking place with the Foreign Minister of Iran Seyed Abbas Araghchi addressing the External Affairs Minister of India on the current situation. The officials emphasise that the advisory was made only because of the safety of citizens since the situation is fragile and unpredictable.
