“Scapegoat in the Snow: Sonam Wangchuk Denounces Blame as Arrest Threat Looms”

A spark in the mountains

The change made on the very day was spread throughout Ladakh: the local environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk who shook the recent riots charges filed against him, not that he did the riots. He alerts that if the tough law authority tries to arrest him forcefully, then it would simply spread further the anger in the region called by him.

“Scapegoat tactic”, not accountability

Wangchuk described the government's move as "scapegoat tactic" and alleged that the administration by blaming him was avoiding solving the problems in Ladakh. He added:

“They are perhaps good at picking out a scapegoat, but at the same time, they lack the wisdom.”

Furthermore, he stated that activity being connected to his name or even of any political faction was like a distraction rather than an answer to the matter.

Arrest threat — acceptance with warning

Nevertheless, he expressed that he is prepared to be arrested under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and Wangchuk, however, pointed out that his taking to the jail might be a reaction against authorities rather than to them. 

He said:

“The imprisonment of Sonam Wangchuk might become a source of trouble for them rather than having a free Sonam Wangchuk cause them so.”

He also noted that some legal steps were involved that were followed with allegations of the PSA case he was building upon.

Violence breaks out — context and fallout

The protest in Leh that had been nontoxic and concentrated on statehood and constitutional safety, transformed into riot, four people died, and many were injured. Officials charged Wangchuk that "provocative speeches" were responsible for the unrest while the authorities were applying tight regulations and lockdowns.

Simultaneously, the administration has disallowed the FCRA licence that was for the NGO called SECMOL, which is Wangchuk's, essentially cutting off a significant route of the fund. A CBI investigation into the Foreign Contribution Regulation Law violation allegations has also been initiated.

A bet on public sentiment

Wangchuk’s point of view revolves around this idea: his imprisonment would estrange even more the already furious youth of Ladakh who are quite fed up with unemployment, promises not kept, and the lack of constitutional recognition. He maintains that singling him out is a way to silence disapproval of the government without actually addressing any problems.

As the situation remains tense and Ladakh's demands are becoming more critical, the confrontation on blame, justice, and governance has taken a new turbulent turn.
