Rising Voices of the South: Jaishankar’s Rallying Cry for Global Unity (Launched Today)

Introduction

On September 25, 2025, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar darted out a warm plea for recovered Global South comradeship and shared effort to change the United Nations. In New York, at the High-Level Meeting of like-minded developing countries, his presentation rang as a loud call for justice, rights, and fairer global governance.

Setting the Stage: Why Today Matters

On the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly, Jaishankar held talks with leaders and diplomats from countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America, and others. The timing of the meeting could not be better — the world is facing a number of serious problems that can only be solved through the concerted efforts of those nations that have historically been hitherto ignored in the decision-making process.

Five Pillars of Reform

In his address, Jaishankar outlined five specific measures to deepen the voice of the Global South:

More robust forums for intra-South consultation to be supported by ample member contributionsAdministrative know-how in areas like vaccines, agriculture, SMEsIntegral climate, tech, and trade advocacy through deft coalition-building

Mutual strategies working to make the UN & other multilateral institutions conform to today's geopoliticsFair sharing of emerging areas like AI, data governanceClimate change, technology and trade through carbon credits, clean energy policy, market access, etc

Jaishankar added that Global South-ites need not just be followers who hitch up to a club that is already running with the big things; they can be trailblazers setting up the standards wherever they go by dissing the dominant North idea. Moreover, as well as cutting edge ICT, the sphere of agriculture, education, and even public health was K.R.

A New Architecture Needed

Jaishankar claimed that the present set up of a world-wide system — basically the UN system inherited from post-World War II days — does not reflect 2025 world realities. He stressed that multilateralism should deepen not wither away and at least the UN should change to welcome the hitherto silent voices.

Some commentators perceive this demand as part of the reasoning behind the initiative by Secretary-General António Guterres to revamp the Security Council.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the growing influence of the likes of India and other emerging powers, the voice is not unanimous. Entrenched power resistance, institutional sluggishness, and national priorities contrary to the reform idea are some of the threats that may weaken it. The diplomatic skills to harmonize the interests of several diverse countries with dozens of members will be put to test.

Why It’s Significant

The point of this launch — turning point — is a big deal. Not only does it convey one of those speeches but also a coalition's beforehand preparedness to influence the future course of world governance. It is for the first time in years that the Global South projects itself not as a spectator but as the mainstay of international affairs.
