PM Modi to Celebrate India’s 79th Independence Day at Red Fort
This year again, the celebrations will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the historic Red Fort in Delhi — a site which is becoming firmly engrained in the national identity.
India is ready to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on 15th August 2025, an occasion that remembers the cost of freedom and the continuing spirit of democracy. This year again, the celebrations will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the historic Red Fort in Delhi — a site which is becoming firmly engrained in the national identity.
A Day of Pride and Remembrance
Every year, the day of Independence, allows 1.4 billion Indians to reflect on the sacrifices made by many freedom fighters in providing us with a sovereign India in 1947 and also take stock of the progress and participatory democracy that allows for unity and resilience in thriving diverse communities. On the 79th Anniversary, India is making strides globally while still holding fast to our original global ancestral families and rich diversity.
The Tradition of the Red Fort
The Red Fort is on the UNESCO World Heritage site list and has been home to the Independence Day celebrations since Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his “Tryst with Destiny” speech as India’s first Prime Minister in 1947. Each year on the 15th of August, the fort transforms into a dynamic and colorful location adorned with the tricolor in many forms, visited by dignitaries, hosting cultural performances, and holding a ceremonial guard of honor.
This year, PM Modi will deliver an address to the nation from the historic ramparts. It is expected that his address will include a review of government actions taken in the last year, laying out future targets for development, and addressing important national and international issues.
The Ceremonial Highlights
The Prime Minister will be paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at his Samadhi at Raj Ghat at the start of the event. Then, the Prime Minister will briefly hoist the national flag at the Red Fort accompanied by the National Anthem, where we will see a ceremonial 21-gun salute that will formally begin the celebrations, along with the cultural program themed around India’s diversity.
For this Historic Day, school children, personnel from the security services, and cultural troupes will enliven the spaces and events with rhythm and colour. There will also be a number of segments streamed live, with the potential for audience interaction to facilitate inclusion for online audiences, continuing the government approach of digital inclusion.
A Symbol of Togetherness and Possibility
The 79th Independence Day is not merely ceremonial – it captures the entire process of moving from colonial rule to the world's largest democracy. As PM Modi oversees the celebrations, messages of unity, self-reliant future, and the collective will of all people to build a stronger and inclusive nation will echo throughout the day.
Tricolor flags will be flying high in every city and village – the air will be alive with persuasive patriotism, as faithful citizens join together, celebrating their past while looking into a hopeful future.
