Devastating Nightfall: Cloudburst Unleashes Chaos

In the middle of the night Tuesday, 16 September 2025, a cloudburst occurred in Sahastradhara and the nearby villages of Dehradun. As a result, there were flash floods and landslides. The torrents not only demolished the houses and shops of people but also took the bridge and other important infrastructures for a ride, thus leaving destruction on their paths.

Casualties and Missing Persons: Lives Disrupted

Due to the tragedy that happened during the night, the officials have informed that 10 people have died and 8 persons have not been found. The district has been waterlogged in many places. Locals who can't move due to being trapped are expected to be rescued by district employees.

Areas Hit Hard: Roads, Rivers & Residences

● The worst incident was in the Sahastradhara area, the washed away can be seen under the images where the entire shops and hotels had been swept off.

● Moreover, Mal Devta and Mussoorie have been hit by landslides and earthquakes that originated from the cloudburst.

● Flooding in Doiwala has destroyed many homes; the rescue department that is working in Chandrabhaga River, found some people who were trapped there and rescued them.

● One of the landslides hit the Mussoorie-Jharipani toll plaza, and two workers got covered with the debris; one has died, and the other has been severely injured.

Rescue Efforts: All Hands on Deck

Both the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have almost all the personnel in uniform they've sent to the spot. Hundreds of escape routes about 300–400 can be constructed taking people away from dangerous places. The rescue crews are not only employing heavy machinery but are also persistently working shifts and thus on their feet.

Government Response: Urgent Measures Announced

The severely affected localities such as Maldevta and Kesarwala were on the visit agenda of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, he instructed the officials to be more rapid with the assistance work, open jammed roads and bring back the services to the locals. The State Disaster Operations Centre is still on alert and is keeping a close watch.

Stranded Lives & Blocked Routes

It is worth mentioning that the following areas were waterlogged: IT Park, Mohini Road, Bhagat Singh Colony. A road strewn with debris near Nainital caused traffic congestion. Meanwhile, a rockfall on the Kalsi-Chakrata motor road in Vikasnagar has led to one person being killed and another being injured.

Looking Ahead: The Challenges Remain

As the water is almost to overflow, the riverside situation is getting more dangerous and the ground is shaking due to the aftershocks. Difficult and tireless efforts are being made to find the missing people, clear the roads, restore electricity and supply clean water. A lot of people are still unable to live their lives as usual.
