IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans break Mumbai Indians' 6-match winning streak, Gill makes massive jump in the points table

Mumbai: On Tuesday, two teams - Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans (MI vs GT) - clashed at Wankhede not only for two points, but also to effectively secure the playoffs by winning the eighth match of this season's IPL (IPL 2025). Though Mumbai was untouchable in the previous six matches, Gujarat has won three out of the previous four matches. Under such circumstances, there was a chance of a tough battle, and it was. The match remained close until the last ball.

Mumbai Indians did not begin well with the bat. Mumbai lost Ryan Rickeltner in the very first over. Rohit Sharma also came back after three overs. But Suryakumar Yadav and Will Jacks put pressure on the Gujarat Titans bowlers in the middle and took the team forward. They also established a partnership of 71 runs. Jacks completed a half-century. But the moment Suryakumar Yadav got out, the Mumbai Indians batting order fell like a pack of cards. Five wickets went down for a difference of 26 runs. In the last few overs, the Paltans managed to reach 150 somehow on the back of the bat of Corbin Bosch. Mumbai Indians lost seven wickets and scored 155 runs at the end of 20 overs. The target of 155 runs was not very large. But one thing is for sure about Mumbai Indians, that the Paltans struggled till the last ball. The same was observed in today's match against Gujarat Titans. Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah struggled hard with a small amount of capital of runs. Bumrah never made Gujarat beyond reach at any point in the match.

Despite Jos Buttler, Shubman Gill did run, but that was at a very slow rate. But Sharaf Rutherford picked up the run rate for the team. But It rained at Wankhede, and with it the match's turn changed. As the rain ceased, Boult and Bumrah had three wickets in three overs with one of them coming in the wicket. Their defeat came from Gerald Koetzha and Rahul Tewatia's adult batting in the final over though. Mumbai Indians finally lost in six matches.

Because of this defeat, Mumbai Indians have lost a position in the league standings. They now stand at fourth with 14 points, and they have two more games left to play. On the contrary, Shubman Gill's side has come on top in the league from the fourth spot with a dramatic victory. RCB also stands on 16 points, but Gujarat's net run rate (0.793) is greater than RCB's net run rate (0.482), so currently it is the same for Shubman Gill's side.

RCB and Gujarat have three matches remaining. Traditionally in the past, the cut-off figure to qualify for the playoffs has been 16 points. Although the two teams have reached the point, the playoffs are not yet decided. But Gujarat and RCB can both assure it if they defeat one of their three matches. Conversely, all Kolkata Knight Riders' matches are now a battle of life or death. They stand at number six in the league with 11 points. But if KKR beats CSK by a large margin on Wednesday, the Knights can overtake Lucknow Super Giants on net run rate and jump to fifth. Overall, it is only natural that the IPL playoffs battle is picking up steam.
