Whizzo’s $15M DeepTech Leap Signals India’s Rise in Advanced Materials
Whizzo raises $15 million in Series A led by Fundamentum to scale its deep-tech CDMO platform, boosting India’s position in technical textiles and materials science innovation.
Whizzo, a Bengaluru-headquartered materials science and manufacturing startup, announced a $15 million Series A funding round on January 20, 2026, positioning itself to scale its contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) platform for technical textiles used across agriculture, infrastructure, protective workwear, medical applications and industrial composites. It was co-led by Fundamentum and South Korea-based deep-tech investor LB Investment and was supported by current investors Lightspeed Venture Partners and BEENEXT, after a round of 4.2 million dollars in seed funding in January 2025.
Whizzo was established as a deep-tech B2B firm and has an integrated CDMO model, which involves research, formulation, prototyping, and manufacturing and allows customers to reduce the product-development timelines, which would take years to weeks. Although it has headquarters in Bengaluru, its basic research and development is done in a special materials-science laboratory in Gurugram. Whizzo also has a global supply-chain presence, having manufacturing relationships and research and development in India, Vietnam, China, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.
According to Fundamentum, the investment is consistent with its Applied DeepTech thesis in the B2B supply-chain environment. Co-founder and general partner Ashish Kumar pointed to Whizzo having an in-house materials science lab and emphasis on intellectual property development as important competitive advantages. The new capital will enable the company to enhance R & D, increase scientific and engineering talent, expand operations in Asia, and increase its export to over 30 countries that it has at present expanded to 15 countries within a year.
Whizzo Revolutionizes Technical Textiles, Targets Medical, Protective Workwear, and Industrial Composites for Majority Revenue
Whizzo, a Bengaluru-based materials science and manufacturing startup, is a B2B contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) that serves approximately 130 customers, with an even split between domestic and global clients. The company works with large institutional clients on the co-creation of innovative blends for their portfolios. Whizzo's primary revenue sources stem from several key industries that require high-performance, specialized fabrics:
-
Medical Textiles: A significant area of focus, producing materials for applications like protective suits and other healthcare needs.
-
Protective Workwear: Developing flame-retardant and protective materials for safety compliance across various workplaces.
-
Industrial Composites: Creating advanced engineered fabrics for industrial applications.
-
Agriculture & Packaging: Also serving these sectors with specialized "agrotech" and "packtech" textiles.
While the exact revenue contribution per segment is not disclosed, these high-value technical textile segments, especially the medical and protective fields, are understood to be the primary drivers of its revenue, which sees over 60% from repeat customers.
Why Fundamentum Bet Big on Whizzo’s DeepTech Leap
Nandan Nilekani-led Fundamentum was the first to put money into Whizzo in Series A worth 15 million dollars, since the materials-science startup had reached an important inflexion point. Whizzo also displayed high technical skills and excellent performance in an industry that tends to be disjointed. Ashish Kumar, co-founder of Fundamentum, claimed that the company used an asset-light, IP-driven model that suited Fundamentum focus in the Applied DeepTech model, particularly in B2B supply-chain innovation. Whizzo integrated Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO) model that combines research and development, formulation, design, and production to reduce the customer development time to only six-to-eight weeks enticed investors. At the heart of the investment argument is the material-science laboratory that Whizzo maintains internally and its emphasis on developing proprietary IP, developing a sustainable competitive moat in technical textiles. Fundamentum also perceives Whizzo as digitising and standardising an older global supply chain and one of the opportunities of India to the World an Indian deep-tech company that can find solutions to complex manufacturing problems at scale. This support is part of the strategy by Fundamentum to back industrial platforms that are scalable and technology-based and have long-term global applicability.
Can Whizzo Put India on the Global Materials Map?
Whizzo is the company, which investors think can transform India into a global leader in technical textiles and materials-science innovation, and that will involve changing the story of low-cost production to IP-based value creation. Fundamentum believes that the combined CDMO model of Whizzo is evidence that the world can be competitive by conducting deep research and with superior engineering. Whizzo needs to vertically push its proprietary IP portfolio to achieve the status of leadership, which needs patented material formulations and processing techniques, which are the core of the next generation textiles. The other benchmark is global scale where the company is predicted to increase exports of more than 15 countries to over 50 and gain substantial market share in regulated markets like North America and Europe. The need to diversify into niche value-added products such as composites used in aerospace and specialised biomedical materials will be important in demonstrating the Indian potential to go beyond the traditional textiles. Also crucial is the continued delivery of R&D output, as the Gurugram-based lab is projected to produce industry-first innovations every 12-18 months. The achievement of these milestones would legitimise the vision of India to the World and bring India to a high level in the field of advanced materials science.
