When the Sun Took a Backseat: Shubman Gill’s Rain-Interrupted Series and Aakash Chopra’s Uneasy Verdict
Twice rain interrupted Shubman Gill’s innings, Aakash Chopra says — yet the young Indian opener’s excellent form still raises more questions than answers.
The Unfulfilled Promise
Shubman Gill made 132 runs in five matches which is a decent performance in the recent India national cricket team vs Australia national cricket team T20I series. But, Aakash Chopra believes that out of the five, in two of these innings where Gill looked most promising, the rain came and stopped the play abruptly and thus the two innings could not be continued further.
“Rain came both times he was actually batting well.”
When Weather Wrote the Script
Indeed, according to the words of Aakash, Gill seemed to be in good form in both matches in Canberra and Brisbane but the weather did not cooperate in either of them. Consequently, the young opener was deprived of the escape time that he had to see through and thus he didn’t get the uninterrupted break from the crease to convert his nebulous promise into a tangible one. They played spoilsport.
More Than Just Bad Luck?
Not only does Aakash Chopra say that it was Gill who was troubled by the rain while batting, he also refers to this tour as “a damp squib” for Gill — a moment of power that slipped from his hands. According to him, the questions about Gill have now increased to a point where it is not just a matter of talent, but timing, momentum, and conversion under pressure.
The Samson / Gill Conundrum
On top of that, Chopra raised another major question about Team India – the influence of Sanju Samson and how the team management has handled the opening slot. He speculated that Samson may not be in the XI because they are hiding the fact that he hasn’t been very good rather than that he hasn’t been good. By creating another layer of complexity, the decision — or indecision — in this matter Gill’s journey becomes even more ambiguous.
Why This Matters for Indian Cricket
Gill is considered as one of India’s next big batting talents, and the T20I series was one of his major platforms to exhibit his skill. The fact that it rained during two of his innings becomes symbolic: even the greatest shot-makers require favorable conditions, role clarity, and uninterrupted opportunity. Without those, potential is just a tease.
What’s Next for Gill?
Chopra is not without hope but he takes a cautious approach. He thinks that Gill may get the time and clarity at home that he didn’t get in the away series. But the statement cannot be more clear: talent will not be enough — whether Gill is remembered as a mainstay or a mere footnote will be down to his execution, consistency, and timing.
