A Daring New Design That's Free

Teenage Engineering is a Swedish design studio known for providing creative electronic tools that enable creators to conjure forms of artistry. Teenage Engineering now offers a pleasant surprise—a free PC case called Computer-2. This PC case is made from one foldable sheet of semi-transparent plastic engineered to be the cheapest PC case in the world—because it's free for users.

Lightweight, Transparent, and Foldable

In comparison to the original Computer-1 created in aluminum in 2021, the Computer-2 uses polypropylene plastic with integrated hooks and hinges. The distinctive shape gives rise to a blend of an ultralight, transparent, and bold case. It folds into the shape that you can carry on the go with a top handle. This is an excellent way to satisfy a certain group of minimalist users that are interested in forms of art.

Even though the Computer-2 has a minimalist look, it can still accommodate basic PC components. It can accommodate a mini-ITX motherboard, SFX power supply, dual slot video card up to 180 mm long, and a fan that measures approximately 80 mm. The Computer-2 also comes with a detailed 18-step online assembly guide that requires no tools or screws.

Sold Out—But Put Your Spot in Line

They went quickly, and that’s no surprise. As soon as units were announced as free, they were sold out earlier than I could refresh on Teenage Engineering's page. However, Teenage Engineering is allowing interested users to sign up for restock alerts. The restock could happen again in late 2025.

Why it Matters

The Computer-2 has plenty of merit beyond being free. It’s a statement. It tells us as hardware designers the design can be creative, approachable, and unpretentious. By giving it away, Teenage Engineering invites conversation that is larger than just a product, about design, manufacturing, and marketing in the tech world. The PC case described above is a stripped-down version that is not only playful but also approachable.

Whether you are a DIY builder, obsessed with all things tech or a lover of design, Computer-2 provides a bold reminder that one need not break the bank for innovation. While it may be too late for you to claim the free offering this go around, there is reason for optimism for a future free offering.
