“Sky-High Sound: My Verdict on the Google Pixel Buds 2a Above the Clouds”
I took the Pixel Buds 2a with me on a long-haul flight and found that they combine comfort, sound, and real-world ANC performance in a single device.
Boarding & First Impressions
During a recent flight from Dubai to San Francisco, I put on the Pixel Buds 2a and immediately felt that they were very light. The earbuds fit securely due to the "twist-to-fit" stabiliser design and came with four eartip sizes to get the perfect fit. Even if you were soaking in the rain, you shouldn't worry about them—they are resistant thanks to the IP54 ratings for water and sweat resistance.
Fit, Case & Everyday Comfort
We can definitely say that the charging case is small—very roughly, 20 % smaller than the case of the premium model—so it is quite handy to put it in your jeans pocket. Even while I was in the cabin and moving around, or on my way to a terminal, the earbuds were hardly noticeable in my ears. Tapping on the earbuds to give a command was always successful, however, unlike high-end models, you cannot use the swipe gesture to control volume.
Sound Quality & Real-World Noise Cancellation
The sound quality was great. When the ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) is turned on, the noise from airplane engines is significantly reduced—in fact, it is still audible though very faint as a premium model might be completely silent. The audio profile is balanced and clean: I played songs such as Coldplay's "Yellow" and Asha Bhosle's "Kambakth Ishq," and I found the vocals to be very clear and the differentiation of the sound to be very good. However, transparency mode (allowing ambient sound in) sounds good but not as much as in luxury models.
Features & Ecosystem Integration
Pixel Buds 2a are enabled with smart features such as Tensor A1 chip, effortless pairing with Android smartphones, and using Google's Gemini for voice assistant requests. Battery life is about seven hours with ANC on, and up to ~20 hours with the case. Charging for just five minutes will give you about an hour of listening time. Some premium features are left out: no wireless charging, fewer drivers than "Pro" models, and slightly weaker ANC, but at the given price, the trade-offs seem to be worth it.
Final Verdict: Should You Buy Them?
In case you are looking for an earbud solution that supports great audio, comfortable fitting, smart features, and still is quite affordable, then the Pixel Buds 2a would be a great choice. Long-haul flight tests under real-world conditions were their strength. The little compromises on ANC power and advanced controls are offset by solid day-to-day performance and ecosystem benefits, especially if you are an Android user.
