Remembering Achyut Potdar: The Gentle Face of Cinema Who Lit Up Every Scene
Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, known for 3 Idiots and over 125 films, passes away at 91. Stars pay tribute to his warmth, legacy, and iconic roles.
Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, a familiar presence across Marathi and Hindi films, passed away at 91 on August 18, 2025, in Thane. He had been unwell for some time, battling age-related health issues. His passing leaves behind a legacy that quietly shaped Indian cinema for over four decades.
The Man Behind the Memorable Face
Potdar wasn’t the kind of actor who demanded attention, yet he became unforgettable. Most people may not have known his name right away, but his characters always left an impression. From his professor role in 3 Idiots with the now-iconic line, “Kehna kya chahte ho?”, to appearances in films like Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Vaastav, Ishq, Parineeta, Dabangg 2, and Tezaab, he was everywhere, and audiences loved it.
He also thrived on television with roles in Bharat Ek Khoj, Wagle Ki Duniya, and the more recent Majha Hoshil Na. In total, he acted in over 125 films and nearly 100 TV shows proof of his unmatched consistency and love for the craft.
An Unlikely Journey Into Acting
Born in Jabalpur in 1934 and raised in Indore, Potdar’s life was never headed straight toward cinema. He studied economics, taught in Rewa, served as a captain in the Indian Army, and worked with Indian Oil for 25 years. Only at the age of 44 did he step into films. With no formal training, he relied on discipline and heart and that’s exactly what came through in every performance.
A Wave of Tributes
The news of his passing stirred heartfelt tributes from the industry. Aamir Khan remembered him as “a wonderful human being and a great colleague.” Jackie Shroff shared a rare photograph with him, calling him a gentle soul. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta wrote that it was “a privilege” to direct him. Star Pravah, where he worked in recent years, summed it up beautifully: “His smile and simplicity will never fade from memory.”
The Legacy He Leaves Behind
Achyut Potdar may not have chased stardom, but he became the kind of actor people felt close to. His presence on screen was like a thread tying big, flashy stories to everyday reality. That’s why his loss feels personal. And that’s why his work will outlive the man himself, carrying forward the warmth and honesty he poured into every role.
