PM Modi Flags ₹5,400 Cr Development Push, Slams TMC in Durgapur Rally

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to Durgapur, West Bengal's industrial hub, to open and lay the foundation stones for Central projects worth about ₹5,400 crore. These projects are in the oil and gas, power, rail, and road sectors. Along with the news about the developments, he gave a harsh political review of West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). He used the visit to promote the BJP's campaign ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Big Projects Shown off

During Modi's visit, a number of important new programs were unveiled:

• There is a ₹1,950 crore project for Bankura and Purulia by BPCL to distribute gas in cities.

• A ₹1,190 crore Urja Ganga canal that runs from Durgapur to Kolkata

• ₹1,457 crore of flue gas desulphurization equipment will be used to improve pollution control at the Durgapur Steel and Raghunathpur power plants.

• ₹390 crore for train improvements, such as doubling tracks and making signaling better.

The goals of these projects are to improve connections in the area, make clean energy more accessible, lower pollution from factories, and restore Durgapur's position as a major industrial hub.

BJP vs. TMC: A Political Pitch

Modi tried to get people to vote for him by saying that the state was being held back by TMC "misrule" in his speech. He said that the ruling party was creating a "goonda tax" environment, encouraging widespread corruption, and getting in the way of investment and job prospects. He told people to give the BJP "just one chance" to bring about a "Viksit Bengal" because young people in Bengal have to leave for even small jobs.

He also criticized TMC for allegedly protecting suspects in high-profile rape cases, such as the ones that happened at the RG Kar hospital and the South Calcutta Law College. He said, "Even hospitals are not safe for young women; the Trinamool has spared no effort in protecting the perpetrators."

Identity Politics and Cultural Messaging

To connect with Bengali culture, Modi started his speech with a religious prayer: "Jai Ma Kali, Jai Ma Durga." This was different from his regular "Jai Shri Ram" chant. He said that the BJP respected Bengali "ashmita" (pride) and that they would take constitutional action against people who are "not citizens of India." He blamed the TMC for pushing people to come to India illegally and putting Bengal's culture at risk.

Modi made the BJP look like the party that could bring about progress and restore Bengal's honor by combining high-profile infrastructure news with tough political rhetoric about corruption, women's safety, unemployment, and illegal immigration. His cultural ties were another sign that he was trying to appeal to regional feelings in a smart way.
