A new chapter in Indian currency

In a truly ground-breaking event today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi created and issued a special ₹100 commemorative coin and a postage stamp to celebrate the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The history-making aspect of this launch is the first printing of Bharat Mata on Indian currency, national pride and cultural heritage being the underlying themes that the pictorial speaks of.

Symbol of unity and tradition

The coin, introduced at a splendid function in Nagpur, is a visual feast with its detailed Bharat Mata relief, the mother figure carrying the tricolor and with a lion at her side – a metaphor of power, unity, and love for the country. On the other (reverse) side, it comes with the official centenary symbol of the RSS embroidered on it, underscoring 100 years of service and ideology.

PM Modi hails India’s civilizational legacy

While addressing the ceremony, PM Modi depicted the coin and stamp as more than just commemorative pieces – he referred to them as “symbols of the continuity of India’s civilizations and her cultural confidence.” He lauded the RSS for its commitment to India, the making of a good human character, and the promotion of people-centric programs over a span of 100 years.

“This ₹100 coin is not merely a currency; it is a memory of Bharat's force and spirit,” Modi said, adding it was “for every Indian a point of pride.”

Bharat Mata: A first in currency history

For the very first time, Bharat Mata, a symbol dear to the hearts of Indians for its cultural and spiritual identity aspects, has been illustrated on Indian money. Analysts perceive this step as that of a more profound acceptance of traditional symbols by government bodies, signifying the propagation of “cultural nationalism.”

Nationwide reactions pour in

Despite cheers being the foremost reaction to the introduction from a multitude of spheres, political disputes over the integration of state-issued money and cultural symbolism arose as well. Nonetheless, they maintain that the portrayal in question glorifies India’s past and fuels the feeling of unity in the nation.

A coin beyond its value

Primarily as a collector's item rather than for its monetary value, the ₹100 coin is projected to be one of the most prominent emblems of the RSS's 100-year India journey. With the centennial festivities in full swing, this overture is made to declare the ensemble's vital role.
