Rishi Sunak’s Tech Transition Begins

On 10th of October, 2025, Rishi Sunak surprised everyone with the twist in his career path and announced that he was going to assist not one but two major companies - Microsoft and Anthropic. With this decision, he moves on from the leadership of the UK to the guidance of the tech-frontier worldwide.

A New Chapter Opens

As Sunak leaves for the world of high tech,his career after politics will follow a new and bright trajectory. Although he is still a member of Parliament, he will have a more versatile role in the technology and AI sectors by working with these two companies.

ACOBA (Advisory Committee on Business Appointments) has set out a number of rules that Sunak must comply with and as a result he cannot do any government lobbying or use government knowledge for his own benefit for the next two years. 

To eliminate the chances of conflicts of interest or the possibility of him obtaining undue influence, his role “ring-fenced” is such that he will not be able to combine private advisory work and public policy.

Why Microsoft & Anthropic?

The point of view and expertise Rishi has on the impact of technology, economics, and geopolitics on the world is highly appreciated by Microsoft. He will be there to deliver his talks at corporate events such as the Microsoft Summit among others.

But the former UK Prime Minister will not be in contact with the UK government while working at Anthropic, a fast-growing AI company that is often likened to OpenAI.

The company Microsoft that has been one of the key supporters of the OpenAI project, one of the opponents of Anthropic, is where Sunak is going. So, he will be in a tricky spot but the contracts are there to relieve any kind of pressure that may be caused by competition.

Charitable Intent & Public Gesture

In an effort to silence critics, Sunak has declared that all the money he makes from his advisory jobs will be given to The Richmond Project, a philanthropic organization he started with his spouse, Akshata Murty.

This is just another example of his behavior: at the beginning of 2025, he was also hired as a Goldman Sachs adviser under similar limitations.
