Earlier this month, rumours surfaced in some media outlets claiming that a coach attached to the junior women’s team had behaved inappropriately during overseas tours.   Although no player came forward with a written complaint, the seriousness of the reports prompted the union government and Hockey India to take note.   Under pressure — from public concern and the looming international tournament — authorities decided that an internal inquiry was necessary.

A Thorough Review Under the Spotlight

True to this decision, Hockey India formed an Internal Complaints Committee under the umbrella of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act, 2013 (PoSH). The committee spoke individually to every team member traveling to Chile for the World Cup.   According to official statements, neither Hockey India nor the Sports Authority of India (SAI) had received any formal complaint — written or verbal — regarding misconduct.   After the investigation, the committee concluded that there was no evidence to support the allegations.

What the Verdict Means for the Coach and the Team

With the clean chit issued, the coach is cleared to travel with the junior women’s team to Santiago, Chile, where the FIH Hockey Junior World Cup 2025 is scheduled to begin on December 1.   The decision affirms that, in absence of formal complaints and credible evidence, accusations alone cannot lead to punitive action.

Hockey India also reiterated its commitment to athlete safety — noting that female support staff will accompany the contingent, abiding by its Standard Operating Procedures.

On one hand, there is zero tolerance for harassment or misconduct; on the other, due process must be followed before drawing conclusions.
