Foreign universities have spoken about expanding into India for years, but Australia’s Victoria University has actually put down roots. The university has begun work on its first India campus in Gurugram, a move that signals how quickly the country’s higher-education landscape is changing.

The foundation stone was laid this week, turning long-standing conversations about international collaboration into something real and visible on the ground.

What the New Campus Promises

The Gurugram campus is set to welcome its first batch of students around mid-2026. Victoria University plans to bring its well-known Block Model to India which is a learning system where students focus on one subject at a time through short, intense four-week blocks. Instead of juggling multiple classes and deadlines, learners get space to go deeper. It’s a simple shift on paper, but students in Australia have responded well to the format, especially those who prefer hands-on, workshop-style teaching over large, impersonal lectures.

To begin with, the new campus will offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in business, IT and applied fields. The idea is to mirror the learning environment of VU’s Melbourne City Tower campus, but adapt it to what Indian students need today, global exposure without the steep cost of living abroad.

Why This Matters for Indian Students

What this really means is more choice. For years, the dream of an international degree has often been weighed down by visas, rising costs and the uncertainty of moving overseas. A campus like this cuts through those barriers. Students can study an Australian curriculum, immerse themselves in a global classroom, and still stay close to home and family.

The timing also matters. Several international universities are now entering India under revamped education policies. Victoria University’s early move sets the tone for what could become a much wider opening of India’s academic doors.
