NCERT to Set Up Special Module on Operation Sindoor in Higher Classes Curriculum

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is getting ready to include a special education module on India's strategic counter-terror response launched on May 7 under Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam terror attack. This is significant not only because it places a serious emphasis on updating school curricula for noteworthy and recent developments in national security, but that it brings students awareness to issues relevant to India's Defense and national security operations, patriotism, and geopolitical issues in general.

What is Operation Sindoor?

Operation Sindoor was a fast and effective counter-terror operation by the Indian armed forces, in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which had resulted in a high number of deaths. The operation showed India's zero tolerance against terrorism and our resolve towards protecting national security. The strike was carried out with perfect precision and reportedly destroyed critical terrorist facilities and infrastructure, which was a strong message for hostile elements across the border.

Why Include It in the Curriculum?

NCERT deciding to put Operation Sindoor in their school curriculum is in keeping with a larger goal of building national pride and awareness in students. Having students learn about real-life operations involving the defence services:

• Consideration of the political, strategic, and humanitarian ramifications of the operation.
  
  

• Maps, case studies, and dialogues with students to elicit critical thinking.
  
  

The module is also likely to draw from existing elements in Political Science, History, and General Studies for students in their higher secondary years (likely Classes 11 and 12), thus tackling the topic with some academic balance and factual correctness.

This integration highlights NCERT’s commitment to its developing educational philosophy—to move away from textbook learning and ensure students have real-world understanding. As they learn about current global events like Operation Sindoor, students will be able to understand India’s role in the world as well as the challenges to national sovereignty and affording peace. 

As NCERT finalizes the last phase of developing this module, it is in anticipation that it will be implemented soon across all CBSE-affiliated schools, to be a meaningful and timely addition to the Indian school curriculum.
