Types of Nail Extensions: All You Need to Know
There are different types of nail extensions in India. However, not every extension type may suit your needs. Here's an overview.
A couple of years ago, nail extensions weren’t quite popular and only a few people would get them done. However, with the advent of social media and change of trends, you can easily find different types of nail extensions that suit your needs. In this post, let’s break down what nail extensions are, their types, and other key tips to keep in mind.
Common Nail Extensions in India
Before you book a session with your favorite artist, here are the types of nail extensions to explore in India:
-
Hard Gel: Gel extensions are made with a gel like substance directly applied to your nails. You can remove them easily by soaking the nails in acetone. Gel extension nails usually require maintenance every 2 - 3 weeks.
-
Acrylic: Acrylic nails are a combination of liquid monomer powder polymer that turns into a paste when applied to your nails. These types of nail extensions often air dry and do not need an UV light to cure. However, you must soak them in acetone and scrape them off for efficient removal.
-
Polygel: These nail extensions are a combination of gel and acrylic nails. They have a putty-like texture and can be easily molded to shape your nail as an extension. The best part about using polygel is that it is more flexible than gel and acrylic nails. You need to place them under a UV light to dry and they can easily last 2 - 4 weeks.
-
Soft Gel: Soft gel extensions are pre-made nail tips that are applied using a gel bonder. The bonder is first applied to the natural nail, after which the extension is placed on top and cured under a UV light to secure it in place. Once the nail extensions are applied properly, they can easily be cut and filed down to the desired shape.
-
Builder Gel: It’s a thicker version of gel that is generally painted onto the nail to strengthen them or to create more extensions. You can easily cure it under the UV light or soak it off with acetone. Builder gel can often last around 4 weeks of wear.
-
Press Ons: These artificial extensions are pre-shaped and can be easily attached either with a sticker or nail glue. Most of these nails already have polish or nail art on them. These are quite inexpensive than the other types of nail enhancements. You can easily remove the press on nails with a cuticle pusher for quick changes at home.
How Long Does Nail Extension Last?
Nail extensions usually last around 2 to 4 weeks before needing a refill, depending on the type, your natural nail growth, and how well you care for them. You can ensure proper maintenance of your acrylic or gel nail extensions by wearing gloves for chores and avoiding picking. You may also expect gaps near the cuticle that usually appear after 2-3 weeks. This often signals the need for a fill to keep your nail extensions neat and strong.
