Tips to Keep Your House and Clothes Smelling Fresh in the Monsoon

The monsoon season brings much-needed relief from the summer heat, but it also brings home that unwanted ‘rishtedar’, musty odours. The dampness in the air can easily seep into our homes and wardrobes, making everything feel sticky and smell stale. But a few simple and mindful habits can keep your home and clothes smelling clean throughout the rainy months.

1. Ventilation Is Key

Even if it's pouring outside, crack open windows for at least 30 minutes a day. Cross-ventilation helps in reducing humidity and bringing in fresh air. Use exhaust fans, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, to avoid that lingering damp odour.

2. Use Natural Dehumidifiers

Place bowls of rock salt, baking soda or activated charcoal in corners of the house. They absorb excess moisture and prevent mildew. Swap them out weekly for maximum effect.

3. Dry Clothes The Right Way

Avoid drying clothes indoors unless necessary. If it’s unavoidable, use a fan or dehumidifier to aid the drying process. Never pile damp clothes in a laundry basket; it becomes a breeding ground for foul smells. Adding a few drops of essential oil (like lavender or eucalyptus) to your rinse cycle can leave clothes smelling fresh.

4. Keep Your Wardrobe Moisture-Free

Place neem leaves, camphor balls, or silica gel packets in your wardrobe to keep mould and moisture away. Line your drawers and shelves with scented paper or fabric sachets for an added touch of freshness.

5. Clean Soft Furnishings

Curtains, cushions, doormats and rugs can trap the bad smell. Wash or sun-dry them regularly. Sprinkle a bit of baking soda on carpets, let it sit for 15–20 minutes, and vacuum it up to neutralise odours.

6. Use Mild Indoor Fragrances

Opt for incense sticks, scented candles or diffusers in earthy or citrus tones. Avoid strong chemical-based sprays as they can make closed spaces feel stuffy.

Monsoon doesn’t have to mean a musty-smelling home. With consistent care and natural remedies, your space can feel just as cozy and clean as it does in summer.
