OTT Apps Banned: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has recently taken action against 25 OTT platforms by banning them. All these OTT platforms were serving obscene, vulgar, and pornographic content to their audience, which led the government to issue directives to block them. Let us tell you that popular applications like Alt from Balaji Telefilms and the Ullu app are also included in the list of these 25 OTT apps.

The government has made this decision under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and IT Rules, 2021, to ensure that any website or application delivering obscene content is shut down. Taking a strict stance, the government has blocked around 26 websites and 14 applications.

The OTT platforms and streaming platforms blocked by the government include some prominent names like Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, NeonX VIP, Navrasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Showhit, Jalwa App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Fugi, Feneo, ShowX, Soul Talkies, Adda TV, Alt, HotX VIP, Halchal App, MoodX, Triflicks, Ullu, and Mojflix, among others.

Notice Issued in 2024

Let us tell you that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had issued a notice to all these 25 OTT platforms in September 2024, informing them that if they continued to regularly post obscene content and pornography, they could be banned. However, most of these applications did not respond to the government’s notice.

After this, the government took a strict decision, and in 2025, with the help of various government organizations like the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, etc., all OTT platforms delivering pornographic content were shut down.

The government states that it is mandatory for such OTT platforms to follow all rules because this type of platform hampers creativity. Meanwhile, some platforms have stopped posting such content and have started promoting religious and political content.
